With so many uses, wireless service has grown in popularity. Verizon in particular is a favorite carrier for many new customers each year. Cell phones are not just for business people or the technologically trendy anymore. Whether you are interested in signing up for service for the first time, or plan to switch carriers, then you should be aware of all available wireless discounts. You may be eligible to save money on your Verizon wireless service.
Employment Discounts
Verizon wireless employees receive discounts on their personal wireless service. Simply visit the employee discount program page or contact your human resources representative. A valid work email address will be required to check eligibility. Federal employees and other businesses, such as Wal-mart, also offer a similar discount. Employees can take advantage of as much as 20% savings on their monthly Verizon wireless bill by visiting the employee benefits website. An application form can be found on the site and filled out. This must be faxed along with proof of current employment to receive the discount.
Senior Citizen Discounts
Discounts on wireless service are also available to individuals over the age of 65. Verizon offers seniors the Nationwide 65 Plus calling plan. This is essentially wireless service tailored to older customers who do not need all the bells and whistles (and the cost that accompanies them). Rather than paying for features you will never use, get a straight forward calling plan at a lower rate. The plan still includes the luxury of call waiting, caller ID, 411 services, voice mail, and three way calling. It just removes the unnecessary extras that an older customer may never use. Single and two line plans are available.
Student Advantage Card
Verizon wireless participates in the Student Advantage card program. For a low $20 per year fee, current students can sign up to receive a special discount card. The discounts offered include a number of big name retailers as well as publications and services. The discounts may vary from year to year, and starts out at about 15% going as high as 40%. If you are willing to pay the minimal $20 fee, you can receive access to these additional savings for an entire year. Not only can students save on Verizon bills using the Advantage card, but on many other purchases as well. Other discount cards exist for slightly higher fees, and include the International Student Identity card and the International Student Exchange card. Each offers its own list of discounts which is updated periodically.
Educator Discount
Some school districts are included in the Verizon employee discount program. Although this may not be the case in every area, interested teachers can check availability by contacting Verizon wireless directly. The discount is usually around 15 % but may vary. That may sound low for a basic wireless calling plan, but when you add up the savings over a year it is well worth a brief phone call and program registration.
Union Wireless Discounts
A number of unions have partnered with Verizon to offer wireless service discounts to members. This includes teachers unions, credit unions and many others. By contacting customer support or checking for eligibility on the website, new and existing account holders can find out if their union membership will earn additional savings. This is not valid with all unions, but only those currently listed as participating in the program.
New Customer Discounts
Finally, new Verizon wireless customers may be eligible to save even more by speaking with Verizon prior to signing up for service. Contact customer support and ask for available discounts. Although these are generally not going to be ongoing savings on your monthly cell phone bills, you may be able to take a percentage off of the activation fee or the actual cell phones. Whether you are eligible for other Verizon discounts or not, make a point to contact a representative and negotiate a discount on your order. You can then request any of the other available wireless service plan discounts to maximize savings.
